HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
39th Session
September 2018
[Excerpt from the statement]
Texaco, Chevron’s predecessor, ran oil operations in Ecuador for 26 years and during that period the company dumped at least 1.5 billion gallons of toxic water that poisoned the environment and affected communities and indigenous peoples. After 20 years of litigation in national and foreign courts, Chevron/Texaco was found guilty by the courts in Ecuador (ratified by the Supreme Court of Justice) of environmental damage and judicially condemned to pay 9.521 million US dollars, destined to a trust fund for environmental, social and cultural reparation. In 2018 the Constitutional Court of Ecuador re-validated the sentence.
