HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
52nd session
The systemic violence that manifests itself in today’s agri-food systems mainly affects already vulnerable and marginalized populations, such as peasants and others working in rural areas. This violence and inequity inherent in the dominant system are by no means inevitable; they are the result of the imposition of a very specific model of production, exchange and marketing, centered on the unbridled pursuit of profit and the monopoly of agribusiness on food chains, to the detriment of the family peasantry. What’s more, this model – promoted not only by the sector’s multinationals but also by their political allies in many countries – is based on intensive industrial farming practices that accelerate climate change and disrupt social relations in rural areas.
