Amzat Boukari-Yabara, guest speaker at the conference organised by CETIM, shares his vision of the Alliance of Sahel States.
‘I would like to begin my speech with a bit of history, which is a bit long but necessary to understand that the Alliance of Sahel States is not just about a pan-African renaissance, but rather about a continuing search for ways for Africans to assume their political destiny.
Pan-Africanism is a movement of resistance, solidarity and liberation that originated among Africans deported to the Americas and the Caribbean who fought against slavery. The pan-Africanist movement emerged in the diaspora, but it is complementary to the idea of African unity. In the history of Africa, the Sahel region has always been a favourable place for the formation of kingdoms and empires with federal and multinational structures.”
