HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
28th session
March 2015
[Extract from the statement]
In her recommendations, the Special Rapporteur rightly calls for social protection for everyone. In this respect, we would like to draw your attention to the situation of peasants. Considered as self-employed, most farmers do not benefit from social security. Yet this is a crucial issue for hundreds of millions of people who are at the mercy of the vagaries of the weather and cannot always count on their harvests. Yet 80% of people who are hungry or malnourished live in the countryside, and 50% of them are farmers. That’s why integrating farmers into a social security system is a crucial issue for the right to food.
