HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
55th session
March 2024
Until 2017, Ecuador was one of the safest countries in Latin America, with a rate of 5.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. However, according to figures from local NGOs, in the month of January 2024, the same rate reached 43 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, making it the most violent country in the region. The prevailing violence leads to a systematic increase in human rights violations, affecting in particular the most vulnerable segments of the population.
